UNB Athletes of the Week
2nd Year Recreation and Sport Studies
The UNB Reds/Papa John’s Pizza male athlete of the week is Kris Bennett, from the men’s hockey team.
Bennett led the Reds in their sweep of the St FX X-Men in the Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey championship series.
He had a goal and an assist in Monday’s 5-1 win in game one, on home ice, before duplicating that effort in Wednesday’s 7-1 title clinching victory on the road.
Bennett was named the Most Valuable Player of the AUS playoffs.
“Kris continues to be a spark plug for our team with his energy and work ethic as his foundation,” says Reds head coach Gardiner MacDougall. “He had a very consistent AUS playoffs, leading our team and the AUS in scoring.”
Bennett and his teammates are in Lethbridge, Alberta, for this week’s University Cup national championship tournament.
Women’s Track & Field
1st Year Bachelor of Arts
The UNB Reds/Papa John’s Pizza female athlete of the week is Lexie Shannon, of the women’s track and field team.
Shannon finished 7th in the women’s triple jump at the U SPORTS Track and Field Championships, in Winnipeg.
“Lexie has had an impressive first season as a Red, and her performance at the U SPORTS Championships is a sign of things to come,” says Reds head coach Chris Belof. “Lexie’s work with our jumps coach and her teammates is paying off. We should continue to see improvements in the years ahead.”
