UNB hockey star named Player of the Year

A men's hockey player from the University of New Brunswick is getting some national recognition.

Philippe Maillet has been named the U SPORTS Player of the Year in men's hockey.

The fourth-year forward from Quebec led the nation in points with 55 on the season.

Maillet also led the country in power play goals with 14, and his plus-minus rating of plus-34 was the best in U SPORTS.

The two-time Atlantic University Sport MVP is the first player from the university to be named Player of the Year since 2009-10.

Meanwhile, UNB's Jordan Murray has been named Defenceman of the Year.

The fourth-year blueliner from Riverview led all AUS and U SPORTS defencemen with 40 points during the 2016-17 season, scoring 14 goals and adding 26 assists.

Murray was named the U SPORTS Defenceman of the Year in 2016, becoming the first Varsity Red to earn that honour.

Maillet and Murray were honoured during the U SPORTS All-Canadian Gala in Fredericton on Wednesday night, which officially kicked off the University Cup at UNB.
