UNB names first athletes of the week for 2017-18
Two soccer players are the University of New Brunswick's first Varsity Reds/Papa John's Pizza athletes of the week of the 2017-18 season.
Oisin McKenna from the men's soccer team is this week's male athlete of the week.
The third-year midfielder scored UNB's goal in Friday's 1-1 season-opening draw at Acadia, and was named the Varsity Reds player of the game.
Varsity Reds head coach Miles Pinsent says McKenna had a strong start to what they hope will be a good season for him.
"He has paid his dues and has worked hard over the last couple of years, so we believe he's ready to contribute offensively," said Pinsent.
This week's female honours went to Clarisse Ramirez from the women's soccer team.
While the Varsity Reds dropped a pair of season-opening road games, head coach Jon Crossland says Ramirez stood out on both sides of the ball.
"She won her defensive battles and she got forward to join in attacking and searching for our first goal of the season," said Crossland.
Both UNB soccer teams host Cape Breton University for their home opener on Saturday; the women play at 1 p.m. while the man play at 3:15 p.m.
