UNB Reds Athletes of the Week
5th Year Recreation and Sport Studies
The UNB Reds/Papa John’s Pizza female athlete of the week is Maggie McLenahan, from the women’s volleyball team.
The veteran libero was a stand-out performer as the team split weekend matches at Acadia and Moncton.
In Friday’s 3-1 loss to the Axewomen, McLenahan recorded a match-high 21 digs for the Reds.
On Saturday, in UNB’s 3-1 win over les Aigles Bleues, she had 22 digs, once again a match-high. Among Saturday’s digs was the 1000th of her Atlantic University Sport career.
“Maggie is a fierce competitor, an unmatched example to her teammates of a ‘never-say-die’ defensive mindset,” says Reds head coach Christine Biggs. “She’s contributed not only digs, but countless assists, reinforcing our philosophy that defence is just the first offensive contact.”
McLenahan and her teammates are back on the Currie Center court this weekend, hosting the Memorial Sea-Hawks in matches Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
1st Year Business Administration
The UNB Reds/Papa John’s Pizza male athlete of the week is Mark Rassell, from the men’s hockey team.
The first-year forward scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in Saturday’s 7-2 win over UPEI. Rassell was named the player of the game. The goals were his 13th and 14th of the season.
He also contributed an assist in Wednesday’s 5-3 win, in Moncton.
“Mark has continued to improve his work ethic and practice habits,” says Reds head coach Gardiner MacDougall. “That has resulted in an increased game performance on a consistent basis.”
Rassell and his teammates wrap up their Atlantic University Sport regular season schedule on home ice this weekend. They host St FX, on Friday, and Dal, on Saturday.
