**Updated** Vandals cause 'significant' damage to Fredericton-area home: RCMP

A Fredericton-area family was forced from their home after police say it was vandalized during a weekend break and enter.

RCMP Cpl. Jean-Francois Martel says officers received a report of a break and enter in the Killarney Road area around 9 p.m. Sunday.

Martel says one or more suspects broke into the home sometime over the weekend, causing a significant amount of damage.

"The investigators described the damage as the place being [turned] upside down," Martel told our newsroom.

Martel said several items were also taken, including some televisions and liquor.

He said the family was asked to leave the home while members of the forensic identification unit processed the scene for any fingerprints, footprints or DNA.

"It's to ensure that nobody is going to tamper with the evidence," said Martel.

The Canadian Red Cross said it provided emergency lodging, food and personal-care items for the family of seven, who have since been allowed to return home.

Martel said the investigation is ongoing.
