Whooping cough outbreak confirmed in NB

An outbreak of the whooping cough has been declared at Devon Middle School in Fredericton, the first outbreak in New Brunswick since 2012.

The Daily Gleaner reports that a notice was sent home to parents confirming the outbreak of the bacterial respiratory infection, and a special immunization clinic will be held at the school library April 27.

The outbreak comes less than two weeks after one case of whooping cough was reported at the school, prompting a reminder from public health about the importance of immunization.

New Brunswick health officials says there have been about 11 cases, most of them adults reported since January.

Whooping cough is treated with antibiotics, but the cough can last for weeks.
