The writer/producer of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Mick DiCenzo explained on Twitter that Taylor Swift was not planned to be a performer on the show that night but was asked last minute to come in and help pay tribute to Jimmy's mom. Taylor was in NYC already because she performed on SNL on Saturday. Taylor debuted her song "New Years Day" which has a very special lyric in it.
If you go to 0:53 of the video you can hear Taylor sing the lyric "Squeeze my hand three times in the back of a taxi" Apparenlty at this point in the performance the whole cast of the show, audience and Jimmy Fallon broke into tears.
