Shrek Being Rebooted?

Shrek is being rebooted along with it's spin-off, Puss In Boots!

How is this possible? Isn't it too soon to be thinking of rebooting a film that was only released 5 years ago? What? It was more than 5 years ago? It doesn't feel like it. Whoa! The original Shrek film was released in 2001?!?!?! It's been 17 years??? Ugh.

The producer behind the "Despicable Me" franchise is helming both and he wants continuity with the voice cast meaning Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas would return. Nothing is confirmed yet though.

So, if the voice cast was the same, how would it be a reboot? Wouldn't that qualify as a sequel, a prequel or a spinoff? Not so says the producer. He says, quote, "The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it's not simply yet another film in a series of sequels."

Hmmm. Does that mean sidequel? Is that even a thing?

By the way, there were four "Shrek" movies, which were released between 2001 and 2010. The original film was in the works long before 2001 though. The film is based on William Steig's 1990 picture book. Dreamworks co-founder, Jeffrey Katzenberg, bought the film rights in 1995 and production began on the animated feature.

Did you know Mike Myers wasn't the original voice of Shrek? The late Chris Farley recorded the majority of his lines before he passed away in December 1997. After Farley died, Myers was hired to take over.
