Five Mile Light Gets Green Light
Kehoe Marine Construction has been awarded the tender to rebuild Five Mile Light.
Last summer the 162 year old lighthouse burned down in a lightning strike, since then theres been a campaign underway to build a replica in it's place.
Kehoe was given the go-ahead by the Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley Council on Monday night.
Rebuild Committee chair Bob Runciman says it's the goal of the committee is to see a new lighthouse up at the start of next summer.
"The firm hopes to begin work on the foundation before river freeze-up, with the superstructure being put in place by early summer 2020," read a statement Thursday.
But Runciman says ultimately it will be up to the construction company to decide when they can begin work, based on the weather and conditions.
The successful bid, at $211,000, is within funds raised by the Rebuild Committee but leaves little funding for extras, including a long term maintenance fund.
They continue to ask for donations.
