Ottawa Now – Union representing OC Transpo drivers says the transit service needs 200 additional drivers, fearing potentially ‘chaotic’ service this Fall

The Canada Labour Code now says bus drivers must be given 30-minute breaks for every 5 consecutive hours on the job. However, the union representing OC Transpo drivers says morale levels are at an all-time low over the way Ottawa’s primary transit service is handling those breaks. Clint Crabtree, the President of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 279, says the city needs to hire 200 more bus drivers in order to accommodate these mandatory breaks and keep up with transit demand. Until that happens, Crabtree fears routes will be cancelled due to driver shortages, potentially causing further chaos in the Fall if more drivers aren’t recruited. He joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
