Jeffrey Arenburg, man who shot Brian Smith, dead of natural causes: police
The man who shot and killed former CTV Ottawa sportscaster Brian Smith has died.
Ottawa Police confirm Jeffrey Arenburg died of natural causes on June 13th.
The Ottawa Citizen is quoting Arenburg's brother, saying he suffered an apparent heart attack.
Arenburg shot Smith outside the old CJOH studio at 1500 Merivale Road on August 1, 1995. Arenburg was found Not Criminally Responsible (NCR) of first-degree murder because of a mental disorder.
Several psychiatric assessments later suggested Arenburg’s schizophrenia had gone into full remission.
After a stay at a maximum security psychiatric hospital, he was granted an absolute discharge by the Ontario Review Board November 15, 2006.
Arenburg continued to have run-ins with the law. He was arrested after he punched an American Customs Officer in November 2007.
In 2012, Arenburg was arrested when he fled the scene after being pulled-over for speeding in Quebec. He was sentenced to six months in jail after calling the Judge an idiot.
Arenburg was spotted living at the Ottawa Mission in late 2014.
