Ottawa Now – ‘I put it on the list with flying cars…they seem awesome but they don’t work the way we want them to’: Epidemiologist says contact-tracing apps can’t replace human contact tracers in fight against COVID-19

The launch of a COVID-19 contact-tracing app has been delayed in Ontario. It is a voluntary, Bluetooth-based system that would send a notification if you came close to someone who later tests positive for COVID-19. Privacy experts have given it positive reviews but the app still isn’t ready for service. Colin Furness is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. He says the app will make it tougher to gauge the degree of interaction you had with the potential COVID carrier, which could cause more fear and anxiety than concrete solutions.
