Ottawa Now – ‘They’re being forced to work despite the fact they don’t feel safe’: Local union leader says it’s time to pause major construction projects amid COVID-19 pandemic


While most industries have sent workers home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, other industries have been deemed essential services. These services range from doctors and nurses, to grocery store cashiers and police forces. Here in Ontario, the Construction industry is also deemed as essential service, despite the Premier of Quebec’s decision to suspend all construction activity. Some workers have expressed safety concerns, arguing it’s almost impossible to observe physical distancing at job sites. Sean McKenney, the President of the Ottawa and District Labour Council, also has a hard time wrapping his head around the province’s decision. He joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.​
