Beloved St. Catharines 'Pizza Dude' passes away at 48
Niagara's "Pizza Dude" Roberto Vergalito has passed away.
Born and raised in St. Catharines, Vergalito first opened Roberto's Pizza in 1999.
According to their website, Roberto's Pizzeria, now located at 22 Facer Street in St. Catharines, was one of the first in Niagara to offer alternative choices such as multigrain, whole wheat, and gluten free crusts.
Earlier this summer Veraglito lead a group of pizzeria owners at Pizzafest in Vaughan to create the world's largest calzone.
The calzone ended up being 60 feet long and weighed 300lbs.
Over his career Roberto Vergalito was crowned the Canadian Pizza Champion, and was invited to Ottawa to make pizza for the Prime Minister and caucus.
He also founded the Facer District Merchants and Residents Association, and The Facer European Festival.
He was 48.
