Thousands of school support staff in Ontario are preparing to go on strike on Monday.

The union representing 55,000 workers including custodians, clerical workers, and early childhood educators has given notice to begin the strike.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees has been on a work to rule campaign this week.

Talks between the union and the province broke down over the weekend, with Education Minister Stephen Lecce calling the job action, "deeply disappointing."

On Tuesday, he said the government had offered CUPE new mediation dates, but officials for the union disputed the claim, saying the parties remained too far apart to return to the bargaining table.

Union officials say they are willing to return to the table to avoid a strike.
