Fallen firefighters honoured in lead up to Fire Prevention Week

CKTB- News- Fire prevention week

Fire Prevention Week is underway with the theme "Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape."

St. Catharines Fire says every second counts so families should develop a plan to get out quickly.

Everyone is reminded to plan and practice your escape from home, to install smoke alarms on every storey of your home and to test your alarms every month.

Meantime, the lives of three local firefighters who gave the ultimate sacrifice were honoured during a special ceremony in Toronto.

Hundreds of people gathered at Queen's Park Saturday afternoon as the names of 46 fallen firefighters were added to a memorial during the Ontario Fire Fighters Memorial Ceremony.

Richard Gatenby of St. Catharines, and Garnet Cannon and Kenneth Boutilier from Niagara Falls were honoured this year.

The memorial immortalizes the names of more than 820 firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty or due to occupational related illnesses.
