New York state to provide cash to update Niagara Falls, NY water treatment plant
New York state is coming to the rescue of the Niagara Falls water treatment plant at the centre of a controversy after pictures of black water near the Maid of the Mist boat dock went viral this past summer.
Governor Andrew Cuomo expected to announce $20 million in funding for the plant during his State of the State address next month.
The state has already pledged half a million to begin two engineering studies on the plant which came under fire in July for releasing thousands of gallons of untreated sewage into the Niagara River.
The Niagara Falls Water Board was also criticized last summer, for releasing untreated sewage during heavy rainfalls that overwhelmed the system.
The $20 million will be used to update the 40 year old plant and it's deteriorating technology.
