Renovations begin at historic local church
Restoration work will begin today at an historic church in St. Catharines.
A heritage restoration company will be working on the exterior awning at the Salem Chapel BME Church on Geneva Street.
The site is known as one of the places where famous Underground Railroad conductor Harriet Tubman worshipped.
Officials with the church have been trying to fund several restoration projects including replacing the awning and installing cable wire or earthquake straps in the attic and underneath the sanctuary floor.
To raise the funds, organizers have turned to a GoFundMe campaign which has raised over $90,000 to date.
