A Good Samaritan used a broom to stop a knife attack in St. Catharines.

Around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday police were called to the area of Haig Street and Ventura Avenue.

Police say a 26 year old woman was arguing with another woman and a man at a home.

As the man was trying to leave officers say she started stabbing his car, and chased the other woman down the street.

She got away but police say the suspect then stabbed a 5 year olds backpack as the child and an adult were walking on the street.

That is when a 32 year old man grabbed a broom and hit the suspect.

He was able to disarm the suspect and wait for police.

26 year old Brookelynn Macneill is facing five counts of Assault with a weapon, two counts of Mischief under $5,000, Possession of a weapon, and Fail to comply with probation order.

Police say EMS were called to the scene but there were no injuries.
