UPDATE | Two dead following fiery crash on 406
A tragic morning on the 406 in St. Catharines.
The OPP's Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says two people are dead after a southbound vehicle travelling the wrong way on the highway at Glendale, struck a northbound vehicle early this morning around 1:30.
Schmidt says the car heading the right way, caught fire and the two occupants, they believe are a male and female, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver in the wrong way vehicle, a 24 year old Welland man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
OPP say the left lane of the 406 NB at Glendale remains closed, but the right lane has reopened.
Schmidt says the accident happened about an hour and a half after a 22 year old St. Catharines man was injured in a single vehicle rollover on the 406 at Westchester.
The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle.
He is facing impaired driving charges.
Schmidt says it happened on the day OPP launch their fall Seat Belt Campaign.
