A message from Bruce Grey Owen Sound MP Alex Ruff
Alex Ruff, Member of Parliament for Bruce – Grey – Owen Sound issued the following statement on federal government support as a result of COVID-19:
The government’s response plan and updates can be found here: www.canada.ca/coronavirus.
The federal government has announced several initial measures to support Canadians. Some key initiatives include that the Government is waiving the one-week waiting period for Employment Insurance (EI) for those individuals in imposed quarantine that claim EI sickness benefits. They also introduced the Emergency Care Benefit, providing up to $900 bi-weekly, for up to 15 weeks. This flat-payment benefit will be administered through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and provide income support. Applications for the benefit will be available in April 2020.
For Canadians who lose their jobs or face reduced hours as a result of COVID’s impact, the Government is introducing an Emergency Support Benefit delivered through the CRA to provide up to $5.0 billion in support to workers who are not eligible for EI and who are facing unemployment. Many of these benefits are not fully in effect yet. The Government aims to have them in place in early April. You will be able to apply through your CRA account or My Service Canada account.
