COVID-19 UPDATE: SAUGEEN SHORES MUNICIPAL CAMPGROUNDS OFF-LIMITS

Updates to harbour usage and recycling program

Saugeen Shores, ON: Spring is here and many campers are eager to get to their sites for day use and spring inspections. However, based on the provincial COVID-19 emergency measures, the Town of Saugeen Shores is advising everyone that the Southampton and Port Elgin Municipal Campgrounds are currently off-limits to campers and the public.

Staff are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and will reassess campground opening dates closer to the regular opening of May 1. As campers are unable to check in on their sites, Town staff will inspect campground properties closely in the coming weeks and appreciate everyone’s understanding during these challenges times.

“Although the provincial government has yet to put in place any restrictions on travel within the province, we are continuing to ask everyone to avoid non-essential travel into and out of our community,” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “Our intent in announcing these measures is to help limit the number of people coming to Saugeen Shores during the COVID-19 emergency.”

“The Town urges seasonal residents not to put everyone’s health at risk by coming to our community at this time,” added Mayor Charbonneau.

Harbour update

With the restrictions the provincial government has imposed due to COVID-19, work occurring on the dry dock is prohibited at this time. This measure is taken on advice of Grey Bruce Health Unit: every social interaction that does not take place will help in preventing the transmission of COVID-19, and in turn, prevent spreading the virus to vulnerable groups.

Hydro will not be turned on in the dry dock area at this time and no boats are to be launched until an official announcement is made by the Municipality. At this time, harbour washroom facilities remain closed.

Recycling program update

The Town is pleased to announce that Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling’s (BASWR) recycling pickup in Saugeen Shores will return to normal operations Friday, April 3.

BASWR's partnership with another provider will mean that all blue box material, including the scheduled pickup on Friday, April 3, will be processed instead of going to the landfill. Thanks to everyone for their patience during this time and a big thanks to BASWR for their quick response!
