Nena - 99 Luftbalons

Before going out on her own, Nena, who’s real name is Gabriela Kerner was in a band called The Stripes. 99 Luftbalons was about the paranoia and hysteria surrounding the issue of war. In the song Nena and the listeners buy 99 balloons and let them go for fun but they show up on radar causing nations to scramble airplanes thinking they are being attacked. She claims the idea of the song came from a Rolling Stones concert in West Berlin where they released red balloons. This song was a huge hit in Germany but  wasn’t going to be released in North America because it was in German.  A DJ in California discovered and started to play it on the radio…people loved it so much they released an English version as well
