Michael Kiwanuka took to Twitter to declare his pride in being black. The son of Ugandan parents captioned his statement, "We Matter!"  In the statement, he details the psychological damage he and other black people have suffered because "we so often hear that we are lesser because we are black." After stating that he is "so proud to be black," he catalogs some of the positive assets of black people and then pledges to "do more to lift up my people.”
