Temporary COVID testing centre will open in Niagara Falls for tourism workers
A new temporary COVID-19 assessment centre will open in Niagara Falls for hospitality and tourism staff.
The centre, located at parking lot of the Scotiabank Convention Centre, is set to open Wednesday, August 5.
The centre is for tourism workers only and will not be available to the general public.
Niagara Falls Tourism is reaching out to local employers to coordinate testing times and dates for those employed in the tourism sector.
The regular assessment centre behind the GNGH is available to the public by walk in or appointment.
Residents can call 905-378-4647 ext. 42819 (4-CV19) for more information on COVID-19 testing.
40,000 Niagara residents work in the tourism industry in Niagara.
Niagara Falls and other popular tourists spots in the region have seen massive amounts of tourists over the past few weeks following news that Niagara entered Stage 2, and now our current phase of 3.
High volumes of patients coming for testing has caused a spike in wait times at current assessment centres, sometimes lasting up to two hours.
On the Monday following Niagara's first weekend in Stage 3, Niagara Health’s Assessment Centres saw more than 550 patients, including 300 walk-ins.
“The hospitality and tourism sector employs thousands of people in the region. Opening an Assessment Centre
dedicated to testing these workers will help prevent overcrowding and reduce wait times for the public at our three
existing centres in St. Catharines, Welland, and Niagara Falls,” says Derek McNally, Executive Vice-President Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive.
