A new lease agreement has been signed between the Federal Government and the City of Kingston for tours of the former Kingston Penitentiary.

The City will pay Ottawa just over $1.1 million under the new deal, a big change from the previous four years of leases in which Kingston paid $1 per year.

Kingston City Council ratified the deal during its regular meeting this week and most of the revenue from the tours is expected to go toward operating costs.

The tours have runs since the prison officially closed in 2015.
