'Papa Walks 4 Kids' arrives at CHEO after walking 125km, raises $105,000
An 82-year-old Beachburg man crossed the finish line yesterday after a 125-kilometre journey raising money to support sick kids.
Russell Mackay's journey, called 'Papa Walks 4 Kids,' began Aug. 24 where he set out from Beachburg towards CHEO in Ottawa.
While his goal is impressive for anyone, Mackay makes it even more inspirational as he is 82, legally blind and diabetic. He set out with a goal of $25,000 finished with $105,000 raised.
After losing is sight about 15 years ago, Mackay started going to an eye specialist in Ottawa attached to CHEO. Seeing sick children always touched his heart, he said.
"That's what keeps me going, it's those little kids. Those little kids need a lot of attention," he said on CTV Morning Live Thursday morning, adding that there has been encourgament from people in the community with every step. "They tell me I am doing great and some of them say they had children in CHEO."
Mackay's family joined him on his walk from Brewers Park to CHEO starting at 10:30 a.m, and invited anyone who wanted to come out and show their support.
You can still donate to "Papa Walks 4 Kids" through the CHEO Foundation website.
