Peter Frampton left Humble Pie in October 1971 over artistic differences. He has acknowledged that at the time, he "feared I had made a mistake" because the group's then-current album,Performance -- Rockin' The Fillmore, was soaring up the chart.
For his first solo album, Frampton recruited keyboardist Andrew Bown from his first professional band, the Herd, as well as then-Spooky Tooth and future Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones. Bown and Rick Wills from the Winds Of Change sessions became members of Frampton's Camel.
Frampton recalls that "All I Wanna Be (Is By Your Side)" was the last track recorded for the Winds Of Change album.
The song's recording was hampered by electrical power cuts caused by union strikes in England. Frampton said, "We would have to switch between generator and main power every other take. This created a problem with the song playing back in a different key than it started out in. I had only just written the song the night before the session. It was a confusing yet exhilarating day. The end result was a great take."
Though not a hit single, "All I Wanna Be (Is By Your Side)" became a popular album track from Winds Of Change. It enjoyed a second life on radio with the release of Frampton Comes Alive in 1976.
The Winds Of Change album -- which featured guest appearances from Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and singer-keyboardist Billy Preston -- peaked at Number 117 on the Billboard 200 chart.
