Bruce Springsteen Taps Legendary 1978 New Jersey Gig As Latest Official Bootleg
Bruce Springsteen has just issued Capitol Theatre - Passaic, NJ - September 19th, 1978 -- the first official release of perhaps his most widely traded live show of all time. The release marks the fifth show culled from the E Street Band's legendary tour behind Springsteen's watershed fourth album, Darkness On The Edge Of Town.
According to the press release:
"The most famous Springsteen bootleg of all time, Piece De Resistance, comes to the live archive series as Passaic 9/19/78, newly mixed from Plangent Processed multi-track master tapes. As originally broadcast up and down the Eastern seaboard, the first night of three at the Capitol Theatre may be the definitive Darkness tour document."
Future MTV vee-jay J.J. Jackson spoke to Bruce Springsteen for KABC-TV during the L.A. run in '78 following "The Boss'" sold-out July 5th gig at The Forum, and Springsteen shed light on how seriously he took his job: ["Y'know, it's, like, it's the thing. . . It's the, I guess, probably the only thing that I live for, y'know? (Laughs) And I just try to keep a hold on. . . I play Buddy Holly every night before I go on. That keeps me honest, y'know? (Laughs)."] SOUNDCUE (:16 OC: . . . me honest y'know (Laughs))
Bruce Springsteen explained that for years he kept his chronic depression personal demons at bay through performing live: ["Y'know, you're young and you don't understand the different things you're feeling -- you certainly don't understand if there's any chemical imbalance. So all I knew was when I played it deeply centered me and chased away my blues. There was an enormous amount of self-realization in playing and when you walked off the stage at night, you knew who you were and you felt you'd done something constructive. So, you're left with a certain feeling of lightness and a certain positivity that eluded me in a lot of the rest of my daily life."] SOUNDCUE (:18 OC: . . . my daily life)
