Crime Increase

Supt. Shawna Baher

There has been a big jump in property crime in Vernon.

Stats show in the last quarter there were 265 thefts from vehicles, compared to 167 in the same period last year.  Theft under $5,000 is also way up - 343 compared to 204.   Assaults more than doubled to  68.

Supt. Shawna Baher says police are doing what they can.  Baher says police are checking bikes and shopping carts.

Baher admits there is only so much they can do, but encourages everyone to keep reporting crime to police and by-law, not on social media.

After a post on Facebook a homeless camp in Okanagan Landing near the Vernon airport was taken down.

The person was complaining about an encampment that was creating a mess with a lot of belongings.   The post was seen by a city councillor and  the bylaw department was sent to dismantle the site.
