Drop, Cover, and Hold - Shake Out BC next week
One week from today is the annual Shake Out BC.
Seismologist Alison Bird says BC records an average of 3,000 quakes per year.
"The interior of BC is much less active. With that said, you do have some activity mostly in the Southern interior. There's nowhere with no hazard - low hazard is not no hazard."
Bird says many popular vacation destinations are seismically active, so it's always good to be prepared.
Aside from practicing drills, Bird added it's a good idea to prepare your home.
"I strapped all my tall and heavy furniture to studs so that doesn't fall or shift in an earthquake and injure me. I've stored all my heavier items down low so that they don't fly off the shelf or out of the cupboard and hurt me."
Bird also suggests keeping a sturdy pair of shoes and a flashlight under the bed in case a quake happens at night.
On October 15th at 10:15AM every British Columbian is encouraged to drop, cover and hold.
