Vehicle thief arrested


Police arrested a 33-year old man after he broke into a business and stole a vehicle in Vernon on Saturday.

In the early hours of Saturday, November 21st, 2020, police were alerted to a break and enter at a commercial property in the 2800-block of 48th Avenue, in Vernon. At approximately 5:55 a.m., a lone suspect broke into the compound and stole a vehicle from the location. A security guard, who witnessed the incident, provided responding officers with a description of the suspect, the stolen vehicle, and the suspect’s direction of travel as they left the scene.

At approximately 6:00 a.m., frontline officers located and stopped the stolen vehicle behind a business on 27th Street. Stated Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. The driver, once detained by police, attempted to escape and ran from the scene. Our officers gave chase, and after a brief foot pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

A 33-year old Whitehorse man, currently in police custody, faces charges of break and enter, mischief, theft of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, and driving while prohibited. Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
