Amherstburg Community Group Offers Rides for Federal Election

Removing barriers is a daily mission for Amherstburg Community Services, and that won't stop for Canada's Federal Election.

The group will be offering a free shuttle service to anyone in town who wants to cast their vote Monday.

Community Awareness Co-ordinator Austin Tyrrell says it didn't take long for a casual conversation amongst staff to turn into a plan.

"We already offer a transportation service, so we've already got the means, let's remove that barrier for people and ensure everybody can vote," he says. "We know firsthand that it's just not that easy. Some people do have various barriers and transportation is one of them."

Tyrell hopes the pilot project becomes a regular service next time an election rolls around.

"We'll have a look and see how it works, and if there's ways we need to make it better before we offer it again? I think long term thought, we would like to absolutely," he added.

He says door-to-door round-trips run from 9:30am to 4:30pm.

The community group is asking residents to book their trip in advance by calling 519-736-5471.
