Health Unit Blames Union For Failed Talks

There's a disagreement on how talks ended between the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit and the Ontario Nurses Association.

Contract talks failed to reach an agreement this week, but the final offer by the health unit is going to a vote, which is not being recommended by the union.

The union says it is disappointed in the final offer but the CEO of the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says it was the union that made the decision to end ongoing collective agreement negotiations.

Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette says "union leadership has chosen to reject further negotiations."

She says every dollar put toward pay increases is a dollar taken away from public health programs and services.

The ONA members will vote on Thursday, March 7 at the Essex County Civic Centre at 5pm.

As of midnight on Friday, March 8 nurses who work at the health unit could be locked out or will be on strike.

Nurses have been without a contract since March of last year.
