Impact of changing U.S. abortion laws could ripple into Canada

A leaked draft of a US Supreme Court decision that could overturn the right to abortion in that country is putting a spotlight on the issue here.

Canadian leaders are among the millions reacting to the draft opinion by the US top court, suggesting it could overturn the landmark 1973 Roe versus Wade decision that legalized abortion in that country.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says every woman in Canada has a right to a safe and legal abortion.

The draft decision south of the border also prompted Bloc Quebecois deputy house leader Christine Normandin to present a unanimous consent motion to confirm the right to an abortion.

The motion failed, and Normandin is blaming Conservative MPs for shooting it down.

Earlier that day, Conservative MPs and senators were warned by the office of interim leader Candice Bergen to avoid making any comments on the draft opinion.
