A Leamington man is facing impaired charges, after plunging his vehicle into Lake Erie on Wednesday.

According to the OPP, just before 9 p.m. officers responded to a single vehicle collision on Point Pelee Drive at Mersea Road C in Leamington.

Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and Leamington Fire Services also responded to the scene, where they found a pickup truck with five people inside which had left the roadway and gone into the lake.

Police say all five people managed to escape with no injuries.

The driver of the was placed under arrest and taken to the OPP detachment for testing.

As a result of the investigation, a 19-year-old man is facing four criminal charges including operation while impaired.

He's scheduled to appear in Windsor court on November 14.

Police say recovery efforts to remove the pickup truck were halted on Thursday as the conditions of Lake Erie were unsafe and posed a risk to recovery crews.

An attempt to remove the vehicle will be made once weather conditions improve.
