Last year for Mikhail Holdings turkey giveaway

A holiday tradition is coming to an end.

Mikhail Holdings has announced this year's turkey giveaway will be the last year for the event.

Co-owner Joe Mikhail says his company has been hosting the giveaway for 19-years, assisting over 9,500 families and feeding roughly 50,000 people.

He says even though the the turkey giveaway is ending, the company will continue to provide meal packages throughout the year directly to food banks, and social service agencies.

"The need is far greater than what we can do for one day and it's not that we want to stop doing this, it's that we want to find another way to distribute it more on a monthly basis because the need for hunger doesn't happen on one day of the year," he says.

Mikhail says the turkey giveaway has been a success but they're looking at different ways to help out the community throughout the entire year.

"We're evaluating different programs that we can basically fund and distribute food on a regular basis," says Mikhail.  "People are hungry more than one day of the year so we're trying to find a solution that helps year-round."

This year's giveaway takes place on Wednesday, December 20 at 10 a.m. at the CIBC building at the corner of Ouellette Avenue and Riverside Drive.

500 turkeys, potatoes, fresh vegetables and cans of corn will be handed out.

Mikhail Holdings is partnering with Ontario Greenhouse VegetableGrowers, CIBC Wood Gundy and Bonduelle North America for this year's event.
