Local Medical Officer of Health Comments on Positive COVID Test for President Trump

The Medical Officer of Health for Windsor-Essex is reacting to the news about U.S. President Donald Trump testing positive for COVID-19.

As you've been hearing on AM800 news, Trump announced via Twitter that he and his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, have tested positive for the virus.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed says it's unfortunate people are still using conspiracy theories to claim the virus is a hoax.

"When high profile cases like this happen, I think it should be a reminder for people to, what happens when people are not taking precautions or what happens with the disease on its own," says Dr. Ahmed.

He says despite Trump's positive test, there are still some who think the virus is a hoax.

"It doesn't matter what kind of explanation you provide to those groups,” says Dr. Ahmed. “They just don't want to believe it and there's plenty of evidence out there for them to understand and recognize that how deadly it can be," he adds. "Yes, completely get it, it's not deadly for everyone but it killed people."

Trump is 74-years-old, which puts him in a higher risk category of developing serious complications from the virus.

Trump was presumably exposed to the virus through his senior adviser Hope Hicks, who tested positive yesterday afternoon and rode on Air Force One with the President this week.

The First Son Barron Trump, as well as President Trump's daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner, have all tested negative for the virus.

Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Second Lady Karen Pence, also tested negative

COVID-19 has infected more than 7-million people across the U.S. and killed more than 205,000 Americans.
