New Roundabout for Busy Tecumseh Intersection
A busy intersection in Tecumseh is getting a roundabout.
Essex County Council has agreed to put a single lane roundabout at County Rd. 11 (Walker Road) and South Talbot Rd.
Tecumseh Deputy Mayor Joe Bachetti says the roundabout is needed to improve traffic safety after a number of collisions in the area.
He says first responders along with town officials and residents have been asking for improvements at the intersection.
"As you may know, we've had many catastrophic at that intersection and in terms of safety wise, the design that's there, that we approved should help rectify that," says Bachetti.
When it comes to the $3.5-million price tag, Bachetti say she's pleased.
"Right now, the earlier you can get the tenders in, the better it is for pricing but it's infrastructure, it's an investment that we're putting for our roadways and it's something that needed to be done," says Bachetti.
He says the county has to expropriate a piece of property for the project.
"We had a few willing purchasers, sellers, we had to purchase some road allowance so there's still another piece we have to expropriate," says Bachetti. "So hopefully the timelines we can get things started in the spring of 2020 and move forward with this project."
An Intersection Control Study was done in June 2017 and outlined that the best permanent solution for the intersection is a roundabout.
The goal is to start construction in spring 2020.
