Salary Increase Approved for LaSalle Councillors

LaSalle town councillors have voted to give themselves a raise, even though their take-home pay will remain the same.

They approved an administration recommendation to give themselves a raise to offset changes in federal taxes.

The federal government has eliminated a one-third tax-free benefit for municipal councillors.

With the increase, they will take home the same amount as in 2018.

Town Chief Administrative Officer Joe Milicia says the increase is small.

"It is about $20,000 or $25,000 for all the councillors in order to top them up effectively to ensure they take home the same amount that they did the prior year," he says.  "It is always difficult for council in particular, they are voting on their own pay."

Milicia says from the fairness perspective, the increase is justified.

After taxes, councillors take home about $25,000 a year.

Back in November, Windsor City Council voted themselves a raise to offset the tax-free exemptions.
