Second COVID-19 Assessment Centre Ready to Move to WRH's Met Campus

A move for Windsor Regional Hospital's second COVID-19 assessment centre is in the works.

St. Clair College's SportsPlex has been used for testing since Sept. 2 while the hospital waited for trailers to become available to house the centre at Met Campus.

Hospital President and CEO David Musyj told AM800's The Afternoon News that the equipment began arriving this week.

"We're going to make sure it's all set up before we have to move it over and we'll have to also judge how busy it is at St. Clair," he says. "Technically there's no rush to move it from St. Clair over to Met."

After months of encouraging anyone who wants a test to head into an assessment centre, the province announced testing will return to a more targeted approach Thursday.

Musyj says the new mandate won't have a huge effect on local centres.

"Right now, even though our numbers have doubled, we've been able to handle it with minimal wait ... but now that we're focusing on symptomatic it will probably level out," Musyj added.

He says keeping St. Clair open with the Met and Ouellette Campus locations hasn't been ruled out.

"We'll play it by ear, and again, if for some reason the numbers become totally unmanageable ... we have the ability subject to human resources to have three assessment centres going if need be but hopefully we don't get there," says Musyj.

Under the new protocols tests will only be given to those who are symptomatic, have been exposed to a positive case and those working or living in a high risk setting.

Musyj says hospital staff will give a 24-hour grace period and will begin screening patients under the new guidelines Saturday.
