President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency in the United States over COVID-19.

Speaking in the Rose Garden at the White House, the president said no resource will be spared in responding to the virus. He says that the declaration will free up nearly $50 billion to help the states and cities.

Trump says he is also asking every hospital in the U.S. to activate their emergency preparedness plan.

There are roughly 1,700 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the U.S. and the death toll has exceeded three dozen.

Health officials warn that the number of confirmed cases could climb much higher as more coronavirus test kits become available.
