Two area grocery stores have been recognized by Foodland Ontario.

The Zehrs store on Malden Rd in LaSalle along with the Metro store in east Windsor both received the Platinum Award.

The award recognizes the stores commitment to showcasing and selling local Ontario produce.

Zehrs Malden Produce Manager Tony Rivolta says the store has been selling local produce for a number of years.

"It's actually a very important award," says Rivolta.  "It's our Platinum Award.  We've been supporting Foodland Ontario for the past 15-years or so and it's great to celebrate Ontario produce."

He says customers continue to ask for local produce.

"We're not mandated to do it, it's just growers take a lot of time and effort into their crops so we want to push and promote Ontario produce as much as possible,"

The Foodland Ontario Retailer Awards are the produce industry's premier competition for excellence in retail display and promotion.

Grocery stores entered seasonal display contests last year.

More than 4200 entries were submitted in 2018.
