A Chatham man is in custody after damaging a police cruiser and using a family member as a human shield against police.

Officers were called Monday to a Chatham home for a disturbance.

When they arrived, a man was outside, holding a four-by-four piece of wood that was about six to seven feet in length.

Police ordered the man to drop the wood, but instead he ran to the officer and smashed the wood into the front windshield of the cruiser.

The man went back to the house and used a family member as a human shield against police.

The suspect was eventually arrested.
