Vegas Lands Pietrangelo, Trades Schmidt to the Canucks
The Vegas Golden Knights have acquired a recent Stanley Cup-winning captain.
The Golden Knights and Alex Pietrangelo have worked out a seven-year, $61.6 million contract.
Pietrangelo will count $8.8 million against the salary cap through 2027 and the deal includes a full no-movement clause.
The 30-year-old defenceman leaves the St. Louis Blues after serving as captain of their 2019 Stanley Cup championship team.
Pietrangelo scored a career-high 16 goals last season despite a pandemic that cut the Blues' schedule by 10 games.
The addition of Pietrangelo forced Vegas to make a trade to deal with their salary cap crunch.
The team sent defenceman Nate Schmidt to the Vancouver Canucks for a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL draft.
The 29-year-old Schmidt appeared in 59 games for Vegas in 2019-20 and recorded seven goals and 31 points.
He has five years remaining on a six-year contract that carries a $5.95 million dollar annual salary cap hit.
