YQG Green Expo taking place Saturday ahead of Waste Reduction Week

As the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority (EWSWA) gears up for Waste Reduction Week from October 16 to 22, they're inviting you to the inaugural YQG Green Expo at the WFCU Centre on Saturday Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The free event is being put on in partnership with the City of Windsor and various community partners, and aims to educate residents on the reason behind Waste Reduction Week, so that they can better understand the issues of waste and waste reduction.

Elizabeth Elias-Hernandez, Founder, YQG Green says there will be an outdoor community drive-thru and drop off in support of local charities.

"So we're having community partners stationed at the WFCU parking lot, such as Habitat for Humanity, we have Soles4Souls, Canadian Diabetes and other organizations to be collecting items that people no longer want to use but we're avoiding it from the landfill."

Items that can be brought to the WFCU to be recycled range from clothing items to electronics such as televisions, computers, monitors, and household items like all appliances, kitchen sinks, faucets, lighting fixtures and more.

Elias-Hernandez says 50 green business exhibitors will be set up inside.

"Just to educate the public about what green businesses are out there. There are companies that are not 100 per cent green but have green products that will be there as well Floor Coverings International. We have different energy grants when you install new heat pumps, so Absolute Comfort will be there to promote their rebates and things happening in the community."

She says an environmental expert panel discussion will take place at 1 p.m.

"Adam Castle from WEtech Alliance is going to be interviewing a few of our community partners, so it will be a great discussion. We have [Unifor] Local 444 [Environment] committee members speaking, Danielle Stuebing from ERCA. There's a lot of community partners doing that."

Elias-Hernandez says they hope to hold this event every year.

EWSWA's inside booth will have the chance to win a free recycling cart and prizes, with lots of great tips on waste reduction, reuse and recycling.
