Illegal cigarettes seized during search of Yarmouth business

Police say 100,000 illegal cigarettes and cash were seized from a Yarmouth business following a search last week.

On July 17, members of the Yarmouth/Clare RCMP  Street Crime Enforcement Unit, Yarmouth Rural Detachment, and Southwest Nova Traffic Services, along with members of Service Nova Scotia and Internal Services arrested two men from Yarmouth County following the search of an antique shop.

A release states the search, which is part of an ongoing investigation into the selling of illegal tobacco products, resulted in the seizure of the cigarettes and cash.

RCMP say 60-year-old Rick Dale Newell, of Port Maitland, and 49-year-old Cecil Thomas Downey, of Melbourne, were arrested during a traffic stop.

Police say both are charged with possession of unstamped tobacco, selling of unstamped tobacco products and charges under the Revenue Act.

The men were released from custody and are due in Yarmouth Provincial Court on September 28.
