The Department of Justice says Halifax Regional Police (HRP) are investigating after an inmate was assaulted at the Central Nova Correctional Facility in Dartmouth.

The incident happened around 7:50 p.m. on Monday.

The department says the injured inmate was treated onsite by medical staff and then transported to hospital, where he was admitted.

Correctional Services contacted HRP and are also conducting an internal review.

Justice Minister Mark Furey says they can't share further details on an active investigation.
