Halifax police has made an arrest following a five-hour standoff involving a man who allegedly barricaded himself in an apartment while armed with a knife.

Halifax Regional Police say officers responded to a call last night on Highfield Park Drive in Dartmouth shortly after 5:30 p.m., in which a 30-year-old man allegedly armed with a knife was "causing damage'' inside his apartment.

When officers arrived, the 30-year-old allegedly refused to open the door and told police he was armed with a knife.

Police say a number of officers were on scene, including negotiators and the emergency response team.

They say the man was taken into custody at shortly after 10 p.m.

Police say the investigation is in its preliminary stages.
