NDP calls on province for paid bereavment leave in N.S.
The Nova Scotia NDP is calling on government to create paid bereavement leave for workers as COVID-19 gathering limits have been increased.
In a release, the party says families who experienced a death during the pandemic have not been able to mourn together and many will be organizing memorials.
The NDP is also calling on the province to rebate the provincial portion of the HST for funeral expenses in the wake of their hardship.
In a release, NDP Leader Gary Burrill says, "Families who have lost loved ones since the outset of the gathering restrictions have borne this added burden for the sake of the protection of the health of the people of the province. This is a sacrifice which should be acknowledged."
Burrill added the modest support, amounting to a few hundred dollars for each family, would be a meaningful and helpful gesture.
Currently, paid bereavement leave is only available to provincial civil service employees and employees in federally regulated workplaces in Nova Scotia.
